Laminar Air Flow Cabinets

Laminar air flow cabinets are designed to create a particle-free working environment. Air is taken through a filtration system and then exhausted across a work surface in a laminar or unidirectional air stream. The filtration system compromises of a pre-filter and one or more HEPA filters. The air within the laminar flow hood is thus filtered of many particles creating a working zone for many applications in the medical, electronic and industrial sectors. In industry these are often called Clean Benches as the air is effectively 'cleaned' by filtration

HEPA filters are integral to laminar air flow cabinets. The European standard EN 1822 has superseded all national standards such as BS 3928, DIN 24184 or AFNOR NF X44-013. Telstar supply EN 1822 HEPA filters to all their cabinets.

There are different configurations of Laminar Air Flow Cabinets:

1) Horizontal Laminar Air Flow Cabinets - Telstar H100 series

Typical Applications:

Medical - Microbiology, Pharmacy, IVF

Electronics - Dust elimination

Food - QC labs, Microbiology

Pharmaceutical - Clean air applications

Nanotechnology

This Product is designed to give maximum product protection. The air is drawn in from the top via a pre-filter. This removes larger particles giving longer life to the HEPA filter. The air then moves into the plenum (an enclosed space in which the air pressure is higher than outside) and from there to the outside through the HEPA filter

All models are supplied with working area Class 10 as defined by U.S.Fed. Std. 209 and B.S. 5295.

Things to consider when considering purchase:

Horizontal Laminar Air Flow Cabinets give only Product Protection. If any operator protection is needed these are not suitable.

Air is blown horizontally at the operator.

If a large piece of equipment is enclosed in the cabinet this will obstruct air from immediately in front of it. In this case a vertical flow unit may be preferable. See below.

2) Vertical Laminar Air Flow Cabinets - Telstar V-100 and V30/70 series

There are two main types of Vertical Laminar Air Flow Cabinets

100% Downflow - Telstar V-100

This type of Cabinet draws air in through the top of the unit through a pre-filter, through a plenum and vertically down over the work-surface and past the lap of the operator. This gives 100% product protection.

It has the advantage of not pushing air into the face of the operator as in a horizontal laminar flow cabinet and also large pieces of equipment do create non-clean zones.

The operator has to work through a 200mm gap at the front. This is essential if full laminarity of the air is required.

30/70 Airflow - Telstar V30/70

This type of cabinet gives both product protection and a degree of operator protection.

The airflow is similar to that of a Class II Biological Safety Cabinet. It does not pass the requisite standards though and must not be used with pathogens!!

Things to consider when considering purchase:

Do you need any operator protection? If yes - choose the V-30/70

Laboratory benching must be able to take weight of unit - typically 100-200Kg

Unit must not overhang benching - Units are top heavy - all the fans are above the work-surface
